For Costner and Reynold's tumultuous working relationship, tensions grew further in the editing room as they continued to clash over how the lengthy film should be cut down.
The movie's initial budget of $65 million dollars ballooned to $175 million, making it one of the most expensive projects ever made at the time. Reynolds also preferred the movie to more action-oriented while Costner wanted more character development. According to an article published before the film's release, Costner and Reynolds also began clashing over creative differences with the director wanting his unnamed protagonist known as the Mariner to be a reclusive fish-mutant, while the star wanted his character to be more of a regular action hero. Unfortunately, new writers, including young script a doctor named Joss Whedon, kept entering the project trying to rework the story. The project then sparked the interest of Costner and Reynolds, who had fallen out over creative issues on Robin Hood but patched things up in an attempt to make this new movie.
